Resorts World Manila’s ‘Priscilla’ scoops three major plums in Gawad Buhay

Premier entertainment and tourism destination Resorts World Manila (RWM) made its mark yet again in Philippine theater as its 2014 production of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” scored three major wins at the recent Gawad Buhay Awards held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines on June 11.
The Gawad Buhay Awards is organized by the Philippine Legitimate Stage Artists Group (PHILSTAGE), the country's only organization of professional performing arts companies founded in 1997.
Bituin Escalante won for Best Female Featured Performance in a Musical, while Red Concepcion, who also won for Best Actor in a Musical in the 27th ALIW Awards last year, again emerged as the jurors’ top choice for Male Lead Performance in a Musical. “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” also won for Outstanding Production of Existing Material for a Musical.
“It’s a bow for everyone I owe. Resorts World Manila, Jaime Del Mundo our director, and everyone who are part of it—This is theirs more than mine,” shared Escalante.
Concepcion was also ecstatic for the win. “I’m overwhelmed, there are no words. It was a really fun project to be in and we all put in our blood, sweat and tears,” he said. “It was already an honor to do the show and to win this is just icing on the cake,” Concepcion added.
Spectacular excerpts from the previous productions of the past year highlighted the Gawad Buhay awards night where the most prominent names in Philippine theater gathered to honor their peers. Jon Santos, Michael Stuart Williams, and Red Concepcion reprised their roles as Bernadette, Mitzi, and Felicia respectively for a captivating number of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors”.
In total, “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” earned 13 nominations for this year’s Gawad Buhay awards. RWM has always been a staunch advocate of the local theater industry with five major productions to date and another pioneering musical to come in “Bituing Walang Ningning: The Musical” this June.
